Ayurvedic treatment of sinusitis
In Ayurveda, our approach is the holistic treatment of sinusitis. This means that at Yatan Holistic Ayurvedic Center we treat to eliminate the cause, not merely to mask the symptoms of sinusitis. To achieve this, we must first figure out what the cause of your sinusitis is.
Step 1: Assessing the cause of the sinusitis.
During the assessment, we must figure out which force is out of balance.
During the assessment we seek to answer the following questions:
- Is the Kapha, Vata or Pitta out of balance?
- Is there an imbalance of more than one force?
- To what degree is each force out of balance?
- Is the issue localized to the nasal passages or are there other parts of the body involved (systemic)?
In Ayurveda, sinusitis is the consequence of an imbalance. So, we must assess how to balance the Kapha, Vata and Pitta in order for the treatment to be complete and successful.
The assessment will allow us to come up with a personalized treatment plan that is unique to you and your underlying needs.
Step 2: Creating a treatment plan according to your individual needs.
After the assessment, we chose medicines that are formulated to specifically target the parts of the body that are causing the problem for you. We have a wide variety of medicines available, some of which target the nasal passages. Others target other sites of the body, such as the brain, sinuses, digestive tract, or whatever else we determine is causing problems.
Targeted treatment of the nasal passages.
Treatment can be targeted specifically at the nasal passages. We do this only after a thorough assessment has excluded the involvement of other parts of the body.
Systemic treatment of sinusitis.
Systemic Ayurvedic treatment of sinusitis involves treating the entire Kapha mucous system as a whole.
Step 3: Dietary advice.
We provide you with dietary advice based on your individual needs.
Depending on your symptoms, some foods may be unsuitable. For example, if you suffer from sinus symptoms and sleepiness, you should avoid consuming oranges, mandarins and pineapples.
As the treatment improves your symptoms, dietary advice will be adjusted and adapted. We must continuously assess how your body is responding to treatment. Then, we can advise you on how to further support the healing of your sinuses and your body as a whole.
Step 4: Prevention of sinusitis.
Treatment of sinusitis is a step-by-step process. It takes time for medicine to make changes in the body and the healing processes to work. This is because many body systems can be involved in the disease process of sinusitis, including the circulatory and lymphatic systems.
As the Ayurvedic medicine is taking effect, we also recommend daily cleaning of nasal passages as well as daily cleaning of the tongue.
Cleaning the nasal passages.
We recommend daily cleaning of the nasal passages with a Neti pot and special Ayurvedic salts.
The Neti pot that we recommend at Yatan Holistic Ayurvedic Centre is a stainless-steel pot. The advantages of stainless-steel are its durability and the ease with which it can be cleaned and sanitized. This Neti pot can be purchased alone or in combination with the special Ayurvedic cleansing salts and drops.
This daily cleaning routine will ensure removal of the daily mucus deposits from the nasal passages. The special salt that is used with the Neti pot helps to immediately dissolve mucus that is very sticky. This extremely sticky mucus would otherwise remain in the nasal passage and cause a blockage.
To prevent the accumulation of water and fungal growth, you must blow your nose for 21 rounds after cleansing each nasal passage with the Neti Pot. You close one nostril, then blow, alternating between the nostrils for a total of 21 rounds.
After blowing the nose, you will instill Ayurvedic drops in the cleansed nostril. This will seal the nasal mucosa and protect it from further injury.
You repeat the process for the other nostril.
Although saline rinsing is a treatment providing symptom relief, for sinusitis Ayurvedic medicines would normally be required in order to fully resolve the condition.
Cleaning the tongue.
The final step in sinus care is cleaning the tongue.
Sinus problems often lead to bad breath. If toxins are excessive, they can accumulate and deposit on the tongue. The tongue is scrubbed daily to remove these toxin deposits.
If the toxins are not scrubbed away daily, pathogens can grow and proliferate on the tongue surface. This can result in bad breath. Specifically, Candida can grow in our mouth, nasal passages and ears.
To combat these infections, a medical doctor practicing western medicine may prescribe antibiotics. However, this does not treat the root of the problem.
